The design objective was to create a house that is energy efficient, incorporates environmentally friendly materials and has a healthy indoor environment. It is also a home that is comfortable to live in and traditional in appearance.
The goal was to incorporate passive and active solar strategies into the architectural and engineered designs. However, to ensure a comfortable indoor environment, these strategies were kept somewhat conservative in nature. An integrated design approach was implemented so that architectural and engineering elements were coordinated and complimentary to maximize their effectiveness and efficiency.
The siting of the house was critical to its passive solar design. The site selected has an excellent southeastern exposure to allow for efficient rooftop solar,
thermal and photovoltaic design while offering outstanding views of the Sierras.
The exterior walls consist of Hardiplank lap siding, trim and soffits. Hardiplank sealed and primed fiber-cement siding cuts and nails like wood but has significantly higher strength and durability. It resists cracking and damage due to wind, cold, water and most importantly flame spread due to its low combustibility.
The roof is prefinished metal standing seam, 24 gauge, with 1-3/4 inch vertical seams. Reflective metal roofs are considered to be “cool” roofs in that they can directly save approx. 40% in heating and cooling costs as reported by Oak Ridge National Laboratories. They are fire resistant, 100% recyclable and should last over 30 years.
